Frequently Asked Questions
Are you ever too young to be adjusted?
There is no lower age limit to be checked by a Chiropractor. The birth process itself can cause spinal damage and misalignment. This is why Dr Mackey often visits the mother and baby in hospital. Adjusting babies is very gentle! In fact, sometimes babies will be able to sleep right through their adjustment!
Do I need a referral to see a Chiropractor?
No! Doctors of Chiropractic, like medical doctors, are primary health care practitioners. This means that Doctors of Chiropractic are trained to recognize your health needs and can provide appropriate care. In some cases, we also refer you to other allied health practitioners to provide you with the best opportunity for wellbeing.
Can I receive chiropractic care if I have osteoporosis?
Yes! Even people who have osteoporosis are able to receive the benefits of Chiropractic care. As always, your Chiropractic care will be tailored to suit your needs. We incorporate some very gentle techniques and always use the least force necessary in order to care for your spine and nervous system.
How many years does a chiropractor study for?
To become registered, our Chiropractors have completed a five (5) year University degree including biochemistry, neurology, anatomy, physics, kinesiology, diagnosis, nutrition, radiography, radiology and more! In fact, you may be surprised to learn that on average, your Chiropractor will actually have completed similar hours of university study to your general practitioner! Chiropractors focus on improving the function of your entire body, especially your spine and nervous system.
Can Chiropractic help my arthritis?
The first thing your Chiropractor will do is to determine what sort of arthritis you have. The most common form of arthritis is called Osteoarthritis (also known as Degenerative Joint Disease or Subluxation Degeneration). This type of arthritis develops due to abnormal stress on a joint and/or abnormal movement of a joint. Chiropractic aims to normalize the movement of all joints in your body, particularly the spine, as well as removing abnormal stresses caused by posture, subluxations, or faulty movement. In addition to correcting the abnormal stress and loading associated with subluxation, your Chiropractor will advise you of nutritional strategies that have been shown to be effective to help slow or reverse the damaging effects of this often crippling disease.
Does it hurt?
Our Chiropractors use a variety of techniques to suit every individual from babies to seniors and everything in between. Your Chiropractor will work with you to tailor your care to suit your body type and health goals. Being adjusted normally isn’t a painful experience, although infrequently you may feel some temporary discomfort during your adjustment, much like the temporary discomfort you feel during a deep massage. Some people will report some mild soreness following an adjustment during the initial phase of their care like the soreness you feel when exercising for the first time. Before embarking on any form of care, your Chiropractor will inform you of any potential risks as well as the likely benefits of chiropractic care in your case.
